Dexter John, who was accused in May of the abduction of Xanier Waaldijk, a Bhena’s Footwear clerk, was yesterday charged with robbing the man.
John, 34, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 2, where he was read a robbery with violence charge. He pleaded not guilty and was released on $500,000 bail.
The charge stated that on May 4th, at Georgetown, John robbed Waaldijk of a cellular phone, valued $40,000, and that at the time immediately before or after he used personal violence on him.
The prosecution had no objections to bail but the court was informed that the charge stemmed from alleged abduction, for which John had been charged two months ago. Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, therefore, asked for both matters to be heard together. As a result, the magistrate informed John that his bail would remain the same as before and the matter was adjourned to July 13th.
On May 7th, John and Viola Morrison were charge jointly with abducting Waaldijk on May 4th, at Regent Street.
The police’s case is that Waaldijk was walking across Regent Street, heading towards Bhena’s Footwear, when he was approached by an identifiable man, who subsequently pushed him into a vehicle and sped off. He was freed hours after.
CCTV footage was reviewed by the police and John was allegedly identified. He was later arrested and charged along with Morrison.
