Police are looking to revoke the firearm licence granted to Andre Gomez who had a murder charge against him withdrawn after police failed to gather evidence from eye witnesses, sources say.
It has been confirmed that the police still have the weapon in their possession. It was seized shortly after the May 10 shooting on Main Street occurred. The shooting resulted in the death of Nigel Isaacs, Gomez’s friend.
Shortly after the case came to an abrupt end in the Magistrate’s Court, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum had told this newspaper that the shooting is still being actively investigated and that ranks are currently trying to locate witnesses.
Contacted yesterday, he said that ranks are still working on the matter.
After spending 27 days on remand, the police prosecutor announced that the charge was being withdrawn based on advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). No substitute charge was recommended and the court was told that the DPP had advised that there was insufficient evidence. The family of the deceased has since expressed dissatisfaction with this development.
Isaacs, a 49-year-old seaman and butcher was a husband and father to four children. During the evening of May 10 he died from a bullet wound to the head which he had sustained hours earlier when an enraged Gomez allegedly opened fire on a man who had jammed his vehicle which was parked on Main Street near a popular night spot.
The bullets missed their intended target but struck Isaacs, who was standing nearby, at least once.
He died in hospital several hours later.
