Saying it is in the early stages” of preparations for the likely holding of local government polls, the Guyana Election Commission (Gecom) has started recruiting and training staff.
According to a Gecom statement, all administrative and logistical arrangements are being carefully fine-tuned and put in place for the efficient, free, fair and transparent conduct of local government elections.
Gecom said it hosted a refresher training programme last weekend for Registration Officers, Assistant Registration Officers, Clerk IIIs and other selected staff from the Voter Registration Division regarding their respective roles and responsibilities. Areas discussed in the training session, according to Gecom, were the correct completion of forms, processing of registration transactions, field verification, field investigation and reporting (double registrations), submission of transactions/reports, distribution and record keeping of ID cards among others.
Gecom said its preparation, including the recruitment and training of competent and adequate staff, will continue as it awaits the announcement of a definitive date for the conduct of the polls from the Minister of Communities.
