Man to be charged with murder of Gladstone George

Charges will be instituted shortly against a man positively identified in the murder of Agricola resident Gladstone George, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said yesterday.

Blanhum told Sabroek News that earlier in the day police received legal advice to institute a murder charge as well as charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition against the man who was arrested on Sunday. He is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.

The man was initially identified as a suspect in the shooting to death of Nandy Park resident Travis Rudder and it was based on this that he was arrested while attempting to board a minibus in the Stabroek Market area. He has also been identified as a suspect in the murder of minibus driver Beepat Taijram.

According to Blanhum investigations into his alleged involvements in these two murders are ongoing.

Meanwhile, sources told this newspaper that investigators are still trying to determine whether the gun, the suspect was found with was stolen from an Eccles home by him or whether he would have received it from someone. When he was arrested on Sunday he was found with a gun and matching ammunition. Ballistic tests later revealed that the weapon is a licensed firearm which was stolen along with other items during a house break-in several weeks earlier.
