Rakesh Persaud, who was held by public-spirited citizens after he tried to rob a woman as she was taking her daughter to a day care service, will be spending the next nine months in jail.
According to the charge against Persaud, on July 9th, at Bourda, being armed with a knife, he assaulted Julie Griffith with intent to rob her. He pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court 2.
The prosecution’s facts are that on the day in question, at about 7:30AM, the victim was taking her daughter to the day care service but was attacked by Persaud as she was crossing a bridge at Bourda. The accused, who was armed with a knife, confronted her and demanded her bag but Griffith held on to it and raised an alarm, resulting in public-spirited citizens going to her rescue and later apprehending Persaud.
“Me just hold on to she bag and did going and run away with it but me ain’t pull out no knife on her. I had it stick in my waist and when I run away a bus driver catch me and started beat me up,” Persaud, however, told the court.
The magistrate subsequently sentenced Persaud to a nine-month sentence.
