Guyana’s hopes of medaling at the ongoing 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada will now rest on the shoulders of the swimmers and the track and field athletes.
The local ruggers, badminton and squash players recorded forgettable performances during Day 1 of competition yesterday and were booted out of the Games.
Here is a summary of the performances yesterday at the courts in Markham and the field in Downtown Toronto.
Badminton
Guyana’s Priyana Ramdhani and her brother Narayan both crashed out in the round of 64 after losing in straight sets to their Dominican Republic opponents.
Priyana, 13, lost 5-21, 9-21 to 15-year-old Be Munoz Polanco while Narayan, 17 was more competitive against 30-year-old Nel Ozuma Javier.
The match ended 21-14, 21-18.
Rugby
Guyana nil-Canada 45, Guyana nil-Argentina 41, Guyana 5-Brazil 31.
Squash- Men’s Singles
Sunil Seth vs Guatemala’s Mauricio Sedano.
Seth won the round of 32 match, 11-9, 11-9 and 11-5.
He then went on to face Canadian Shawn Delierre where he lost in the round of 16, 0-3.
Delierre won in straight sets, 11-3, 11-3 and 11-8.
Jason-Ray Khalil vs Paraguay’s Nicolas Caballero.
Khalil lost the round of 32 match 11-2, 11-5 and 11-4.
Swimming action starts on Tuesday at Scarborough while Track and Field begins on July 21 at North York.
