No bail for accused in bid to smuggle ganja into interior

A man was yesterday charged with trying to smuggle ganja through a shipment to the interior.

Collin Downes, 54, was remanded to prison after he was charged with having 280 grammes of cannabis for trafficking at the Ogle Airport.

According to Prosecutor Sherlock King, a rank from the Narcotics Branch conducted searches on cargo destined for Kaikan, Cuyuni-Mazaruni on Saturday and found the drugs concealed in a rice bag.

An investigation was carried out and it was revealed that Downes was responsible for the bag. The police later found out that Downes was in the interior.

He was subsequently located and King said he confessed to trafficking the drugs, which he claimed to be sending to one of his brother’s workers.

He was subsequently arrested and charged.

Downes pleaded not guilty when the charge was read by Magistrate Zamilla Ally at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. King objected to bail and Downes was remanded to prison until August 11.
