The Ministry of Public Works is to restore barriers on the railway embankment bridge at Liliendaal to prevent trucks from crossing.
Following the extensive overhaul of the bridge last month, the Ministry of Public Works had stated that trucks would be barred from crossing because of the damage that was being caused to the structure. The Ministry then erected uprights on both sides of the bridge attached to bars which were ten feet in height.
Within hours of the erecting of the barriers, one was ripped away by a truck which appeared unaware of its presence. The other barrier was also demolished sometime after by another truck. A `No trucks’ sign had been placed in the vicinity of the barriers.
Geoffrey Vaughn, Work Services Group Coordinator of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, told Stabroek News on Tuesday that the Ministry is aware of the damage the structures had sustained. He said he couldn’t state a definite time when the Ministry will repair the structures but said that one of the persons who damaged one of them had contacted the Ministry and is willing to compensate for the repairs.
The Ministry of Public Works had said in June that repairs to the Liliendaal bridge’s structure were executed by Demerara Harbour Bridge Inc while its surfacing was done by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s Force Account Unit. The ministry had said that the estimated cost of the project was $12M.
