An earth tremor was felt in Georgetown at about 11.20 am today.
Residents around the city are reporting their experiences. Staff of the huge Guyana Revenue Authority head office on Camp Street were told by the authorities to evacuate and they gathered outside on Camp Street while checks were made internally. Some buildings were reported as shaking after the tremor and there were ripples in pools of water.
This tremor was felt from a strong earthquake off of Barbados, the second for the morning in that area.
The second earthquake occurred at 11:16 a.m. had a magnitude of 6.4 and occurred 125 kilometres to the northeast of Barbados. This is the one that was felt in Guyana.
Just after 7 a.m. the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre recorded the first one, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake.It occurred 125 kilometres to the northeast of Barbados.
Residents in several Barbados parishes reported feeling the tremor but there are no reports of damage.
