While floodwater left many residents reeling yesterday, it proved to be a lifeline for an Industry, East Coast Demerara family whose home was saved from a fire.
The fire was quickly put out after neighbouring residents used floodwater from overnight thunderstorms to extinguish it, homeowner Joseph Kunge said.
Kunge told Stabroek News that he was at work when a neighbour saw the kitchen door of his two-storey home on fire and quickly alerted others. The fire started around 9:30AM.
The home is occupied by five persons, Kunge said.
Kunge was told by firemen that the fire might have been the result of an arson attempt. When asked if he had a dispute with anyone, Kunge responded in the negative. However, the man believes the attempt on his home stemmed from an incident that occurred several days earlier.
Kunge said his son is a police officer and he had observed two vans transporting illegal chickens. He said his son alerted the police but when they responded the men had already disappeared. Kunge believes the arson attempt was an act of revenge.
