The grand finale of the inaugural NPG Packaging First Division Basketball tourney between Canje Knights and Smithfield Rockers has been rescheduled to Sunday July 26th at the Vryman’s Erven Basketball Court.
According to tournament coordinator Vibert Garrett, the championship matchup was rescheduled due to the inclement weather as well as the recently concluded Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) championship, which featured several of the competing players.
Canje Knights clinched their berth to the finale after crushing Fryrish Black Sharks by an 83-66 score line in their semi-final affair. On the other hand Smithfield Rockers sealed their place in the championship matchup after crushing Rosehall Town Jammers 75-45 in the semi-final round.
The Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA)-sanctioned tournament featured a total of seven teams from both the East and West Berbice area. The other teams that competed in the tourney were Hopetown Steelers, New Amsterdam Warriors and Ithaca Hard-Liners.
The winner of the tournament will walk away with the championship trophy and a financial incentive while the runner-up will pocket the respective accolade and a financial incentive. Similarly, incentives will also be awarded to individual players.
