Denesh Ramdin, the Guyana Amazon Warriors skipper said the upcoming matches are a must win for the local franchise, as they are expected to play their first game at home this evening in this year’s Hero CPL T20 tourney, against the St Lucia Zouks at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Speaking at a brief press conference held at the Stadium’s boardroom, Ramdin and Coach Carl Hooper were very upbeat despite Wednesday’s abandoned match against the Jamaica Tallawahs. “In the camp, the vibes have been good so far, it’s unfortunate we didn’t get to play last night to get those two points. On our home ground we have a good record here so hopefully we can continue playing good cricket and move onto Trinidad”, said Ramdin.
Guyana gained one point after their match was abandoned; taking their total to seven and the captain admitted that while they were not able to gain the two points, they were still grateful for the one and with three games remaining, they will indeed fancy their chances of qualifying for the finals.
“I wouldn’t say it affected us badly, it was a good point to get because [if] we do win the rest of our games we still have a good chance to finish in the top two or we could probably top the group it depends [on] the margin of victory by the other teams. We cannot afford to relax, it is important we keep up the winning momentum. Tomorrow (today) is a very important and it’s very important we do the basics right”, said Ramdin.
The wicket-keeper also acknowledged the possible dangers which lie ahead in their forthcoming matches but made mention of Saturday’s opponents, the Barbados Tridents who he said has good judgment of the conditions, adding that their skipper Kieron Pollard is a possible threat.
Meanwhile, Hooper pointed out that his players were in good shape and not carrying any injuries and is hopeful of selecting the best possible XI for the games ahead. With forecasts predicting more rain, the Warriors will have their proverbial ‘fingers crossed’ ahead of the next few matches here in Guyana.
Weather permitting, the match will bowl off at 20:00hrs tonight.
