Three suspects in Thursday’s evening robbery at the M Ali and Son Supermarket in New Amsterdam are now in custody after police pursued them through the town in the aftermath of the attack.
There was a shootout between police and at least two men at one point but no one was injured.
Two men carried out the robbery around 7PM on Thursday at the Main and Pope streets, New Amsterdam supermarket, from where they carted off $350,000, a 9mm pistol and a quantity of phone cards.
The men also brutalised Nazmoon Ali, 64, who was in charge of the store at the time, and later one of them attempted to shoot a sales clerk but ended wounding his accomplice instead.
The men, who had two waiting accomplices, jumped into a waiting car and escaped after committing the crime.
Following the robbery, police launched a mobile patrol around the town and acting on information received went to the New Amsterdam car park at Strand Road, were four men in a car scattered upon seeing them.
According to a police statement, the ranks, however, managed to arrest one of them.
The police added that they subsequently arrested another suspect at Strand Road and King Street, New Amsterdam. He was found with an unlicensed .38 revolver along with 10 matching rounds.
In addition, a patrol later confronted two men along Republic Avenue, New Amsterdam, during which there was an exchange of gunfire, but the men managed to escape.
Further investigations led to the arrest of a man at Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, police added.
Two of the suspects have reportedly confessed to being a part of the M Ali and Son supermarket robbery.
The shooter in the robbery, according to police source, is among the three persons in custody. However, the shot man remains at large.
During the robbery, Ali was gun-butted several times as she resisted showing the men were the valuables were.
The businesswoman said that she was unhappy with the current crime situation.
However, she commended the police for their dedicated service during their patrol in the night.
The supermarket has been robbed on numerous occasions. In 2014, the said supermarket was robbed of millions as the owner was about to make a deposit at a bank.
