We should focus on cleaning the air of foul language

Dear Editor,

Our government is displaying a wonderful sense of urgency in addressing shortcomings and inefficiencies in organisations, agencies and ministries. In other words, all of our government ministers are people who are honourable men and women who are beyond reproach.

This is applaudable in the face of a society that practises and behaves in a dishonourable, immoral and conceited way as part and parcel of everyday dealings.

We the citizens only hope that this display of competency and good will are made a permanent fixture in the lives of Guyanese.

While the clearing of physical garbage countrywide is given much prominence, equal focus should be placed on cleaning the air of the incessant use of foul language. Rid the society of this scourge by placing people before the courts and fining them. There are those who do not show even the slightest care regarding children or women and other respectable people around when they release their dirty foul-mouthed language. The relevant ministry should place notices countrywide that the use of ‘cuss’ words in public places is a chargeable offence. River fronts, bus parks, drinking corners, etc, should be targeted areas. Not forgetting some police stations.

There should be a ministry for the promotion of morals.

It does not make good sense that we have our leaders living by the book and yet presiding over a nation that is exposed daily to certain songs, ‘cussing’ and other immoral happenings.

Yours faithfully,
