A 58-year-old man is in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after an alleged drunk driver struck him down on Friday. The driver is currently in custody.
Ganganan Dhanraj was walking on the left side of the road at the Anna Regina New Housing Scheme, when he was struck down, his son Lalchand Dhanraj said.
Speaking to Stabroek News at the GPH, Lalchand said his father had a stroke two years ago and would usually take walks in the mornings and afternoons based on his doctor’s advice.
Ganganan was on life support at the Anna Regina Hospital before he was taken to GPH, his son said. He added that doctors at the hospital told him that his father’s condition is not promising and he must pray for him to recover.
Lalchand said there was a rumour going around that his father had an epileptic seizure, but he disputed this. He said a lot of people in the area witnessed the accident.
In addition, he said he had observed the driver at the hospital “staggering” and he believed this was a sign of intoxication. However, the police did not carry out a breathalyzer test at the scene and promised to do it “later,” he said, adding that he was worried the driver might escape charges.
