A 63-year-old man of Queenstown Village, Essequibo Coast was yesterday struck by a car and killed while he was walking along the Public Road in the village.
Dead is Derrick Glasgow known as ‘Puddle’ of Bedford Street, Queenstown, who was knocked down around 4.30 pm yesterday.
This publication was told that Glasgow and his friend came out of a yard and were walking north on the Queenstown Public Road while the car bearing number plate PMM 6118 which was heading in the opposite direction struck him.
The driver and with three other persons were in the vehicle and this publication was told that the car was speeding. The driver also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and reportedly tried to escape the accident scene but was apprehended by the villagers.
Glasgow reportedly sustained injuries to his head and feet and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Suddie Public Hospital.
Meanwhile, at the home of Glasgow, his wife of 20 years, Luciana Abrams said that her husband left home in the morning to work in the village.
“Derrick left this morning to go to work and he came home around midday and give me some money. Then he left again and said he was going to buy poison and I didn’t see him after then. All I heard was that he got in an accident and died. I still cannot believe it,” she said.
The driver and the other occupants of the car were detained by police and are in custody assisting with investigations.
