Squash players make strong start at Caribbean c/ships

Squash players from the defending overall team champion Guyana made a strong start for singles honours on the opening day of the 33rd Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) championships in Barbados yesterday

In the boys U19 singles, Nyron Joseph defeated Sean Murphy of the Cayman Islands 11-13, 11-3, 11-8 11-6 while Alec Melville defeated James Lanser of Trinidad and Tobago 11-7, 11-6, 11-3. Melville would also suffer defeat on the day as he lost to Jake Mahfood of Jamaica 11-5, 11-3, 11-6.

In the u-17 matches, Benjamin Mekdeci defeated Luke Roberts of Jamaica 11-2, 11-5, 11-3 while Alexander Cheeks defeated Nicholas Shaw of Trinidad and Tobago 11-3, 11-2, 11-2 and Mikal Quashie of the Eastern Caribbean States 6-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7.

Cheeks would also suffer a defeat as went down to Josiah Griffith of Barbados 11-3, 11-2, 11-3. In the u-13 boys section, Shomari Wiltshire defeated Jlan McMaster 11-3, 11-1, 11-4 while Samuel Ince-Carvahal defeated Marcus Jordan of Barbados 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 and Joshua Poon of Trinidad and Tobago 11-3 11-2, 11-2.

Justin Lilico also recorded a win for Guyana in the division as he defeated Aiden Parris of Barbados in straight sets 11-5, 11-6, 11-4.

In the other matches of the section, Ryan Archer of Barbados defeated Demetrius De Abreu 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8 while Joshua Williams of Trinidad and Tobago defeated Quinn Lilico 11-3, 11-4, 14-12 and Charlie Riker of Bermuda defeated Xavier Gordon 11-1, 11-1, 11-0.

The final matches of the section saw Cayman Island’s Jace Jervis defeating Gianni Carpenter 11-6, 7-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-2 and Jlan McMaster of Easter Caribbean States brushing aside Quinn Lilico 11-0, 11-0, 11-4.

In the u-15 section, Daniel Islam defeated Barbados’s Kemar Lord 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 while sibling Anthony Islam defeated Karan Dhiman of Jamaica 11-4, 11-5, 11-3. In the female section, Taylor Fernandes overcame Tiye Williams of Bermuda 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 while Larissa Wiltshire defeated Alexander Artuch of the Cayman Islands 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 in u-19 fixtures.

In the u-15 section, Makeda Harding defeated Vanessa Fullerton of Cayman Islands 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 while Rebecca Low defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Gaby Scott 11-6, 11-2, 11-7 and  Sarah Lewis defeated Kerstin Gordon of the Eastern Caribbean States 12-10, 11-2, 11-8 in u-17 matches.

In the u-13 division, Madison Fernandes defeated Nicola De Verteuil of Trinidad and Tobago 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 while Kirsten Gomes defeated Aliyah Persaud 11-5, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3.

The final fixtures of the section saw Chloe Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago defeating Sage Gordon 11-4, 11-5, 11-7 and Lauren Fullerton of the Cayman Islands defeating Haley Carpenter 11-0, 11-0, 11-2.
