Speaking to this newspaper, the man’s niece, recalled that she last saw him on Saturday around 6:30 PM when he left home with a friend to attend the wedding.

The woman added that after Roopchand’s friend came to pick him up for the wedding, arrangements were made by his mother for him to be dropped back home with the said vehicle since she didn’t want him returning alone.

But according to the niece, things didn’t go as planned since after the men reached the wedding house they went their separate ways.

After spending some hours, Roopchand decided to return home around 2:00 AM yesterday when tragedy struck as he was making his way across the Enmore railway embankment road. The distraught woman explained that while her uncle was halfway across the road he was struck down by a motor car which was reportedly travelling at a fast rate east along the said road.

The injuries he sustained included a broken right foot and hands along with head injuries.

Another relative said he heard of the accident about two hours after when a bus driver who is known to the family visited their home to break the tragic news to them.

The man said he immediately rushed to the scene where he saw Roopchand lying at the corner of the road in blood. The body was waiting to be transported to the funeral parlour.

When Stabroek News visited the dead man’s house yesterday, a number of relatives and friends gathered in shock while preparations were being made for his wake. The driver remains in police custody.

Roopchand leaves to mourn his two children ages five and seven.
