A Linden man accused of stealing a motorcycle was granted $200, 000 bail when he appeared in a city court charged with the offence.
Orlando Brewster, 22, told Magistrate Ann McLennan, before whom he appeared on Friday, that he was not guilty.
It is alleged that Brewster, during the month of March, at Wisroc Housing Scheme, stole a motorcycle valued $287,000, which was the property of Mark Goring.
Brewster’s attorney pleaded with the court to consider reasonable bail for his client, while noting that there were special reasons why Brewster should be granted bail.
The lawyer said that Brewster who is a mechanic, works in the interior. Recently, he added, the man returned from the interior and heard rumours that he was needed in matters engaging the police.
He then turned himself in to the police, since he was innocent of the charge, the lawyer said.
But Prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail.
The prosecutor cited the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the motorcycle was not recovered as reasons for his objections, and he requested a short date for the commencement of trial.
Despite the prosecutor’s objection, the magistrate set bail and the matter was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court for July 22nd.
