As a result of the visit of Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson, to the Mazaruni Dockyard, it was determined that there is an immediate need to revitalize the operations of that facility, a release from the Ministry said yesterday.
The release noted that the Dockyard is the primary location for the repair of vessels that ply the numerous riverain routes.
The release said that it was also determined that viability can only be ensured by the acquisition of new equipment, a complete overhaul of the facility and improved staffing to which the minister has made a commitment.
Ferguson was accompanied by the General Manager (ag.) of the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD), Marclene Merchant, Personnel Manager, Ms. Hughes, and the Chief Mechanical Engineer, Mr. Griffith. The Minister also outlined several initiatives that she said would see the rebounding of the T&HD across the country.
A priority would be the regeneration of major stellings, like the one at Bartica, so it becomes a functioning hub for traffic. Additionally, all vessels within the fleet would be upgraded, training and enhancement of the human resource potential pursued along with the rehabilitation of structures and facilities to bring the operations to an optimum level.
Recognizing that this will not be an easily accomplished task, the Minister reiterated her commitment and that of the Government to achieving it, the release said.
