The Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) has teamed with veterinarians from Panama and Trinidad and Tobago to offer free neutering and spaying for dogs and cats between July 26th and August 1st.
According to a GSPCA press release, the initiative has been made possible through the auspices of the Humane Society International (HSI) and all interested persons can call the GSPCA at telephone number 226-4237 or visit its office at Robb Street and Orange Walk.
The spaying and neutering are surgeries performed to stop cats and dogs from reproducing and thereby prevent unwanted pregnancies. During a typical lifetime, the release said, both animals can produce thousands of puppies and kittens which will need proper care and without which their lives can be miserable.
Additionally, several other benefits can be had from the surgeries when performed by a qualified and experienced veterinarians.
These include pets being less likely to go roaming; pets being less likely to get diseases like certain kinds of cancer; and less noise and inconvenience from male animals trying to mate with the females since the females will no longer go into heat.
Both procedures are usually completed in approximately 35 minutes and the animals are placed under anaesthesia during the process, the GSPCA said.
Patrons who will benefit from the services are, however, warned to keep pets quiet after surgery so as not to “burst stitches” that bind cuts made during the operation and cuts will also have to be cleaned until healing is completed.
