Guyana will begin their quest to retain their West Indies Cricket Board Regional Under-15 title tomorrow when they square off against Trinidad & Tobago in the first round played at the Albion Cricket Club Ground, Berbice.
Three matches will be played per round, with four time champs Jamaica and Windward Islands playing at the Guyana National Stadium while Barbados will tackle Leeward Islands at Wales and will continue until it culminates on July 30.
The teams arrived in Guyana on Tuesday and will prepare to lock horns with their neighbors for the next few days in some high-intense 50 over cricket across venues in Guyana.
National U15 head coach Julian Moore said despite weather hampering their outdoor session, he is nevertheless confident that the local side will utilize the familiar conditions at home during the tourney.
Moore, last year’s Regional U19 winning coach also said that he plans on taking things one step at a time and is hopeful of a good showing by his young players who he expects to use this tourney as another stepping-stone towards development in the future.
The tournament will be contested in a round-robin format, featuring five rounds of matches, with the team accumulating the most points throughout the length of the competition being crowned champs.
Guyana’s opponent, Trinidad won the first tournament played in 1996, also holding the record for the most Regional Under-15 title wins, seven, winning in; 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2010, and 2013.
Meanwhile, the current champs won the titles in 1998 and 1999 before regaining the title last year when they edged Jamaica in points. The match is expected to bowl off at 9:30hrs.
