President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Wycliffe “Dave” Cameron revealed that new government of Guyana yesterday confirmed their support and willingness to sit with the WICB as well as the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) in order to resolve the current state of cricket in the country.
This ground-breaking address was delivered last evening at the WICB’s Town Hall Meeting held at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) pavilion, as Cameron, WICB Vice-President Emmanuel Nanthan and GCB Secretary/WICB Director Anand Sanasie engaged in a tense session of questions and answers with local stakeholders of cricket, as to seek a better way forward for the rejuvenation of cricket locally and inevitably, West indies cricket.
Cameron confirmed that recent talks with the Minister of Sport Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine saw a pact being made by the respective entities who agreed that a way forward will be forged. The WICB head also pointed out that while many areas of concern were aired by some of the stakeholders, in the end, the progression and eventual rebirth of a smooth governing body or state of cricket in Guyana must be met outside of the courtroom.
He maintained that the squabble among the various parties should discontinue, noting that all three of the constituent boards which make up the GCB, namely; Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo along with the respective area boards and clubs should come together and help to solve the issues because it is impossible for anyone to make such amends alone.
Meanwhile, Nanthan declared that better communication within the local cricket community is needed at such a time when there seems to be numerous issues and concerns by the various boards and stakeholders. He pointed out that Guyana’s heritage in cricket is as deep as or even deeper than West Indies cricket and as such, persons should try to preserve and maintain such a pristine legacy of the sport.
