EWARTON, Jamaica, CMC – Captain Kacey Carty struck a fine 81 to lead Leeward Islands to a 16-run victory over Barbados, in the second round of the Regional Under-19 Championship here Thursday.
His knock was the foundation of his side’s 220 all out off 45.4 overs at Ewarton Oval, with Tyrone Williams hitting 49 and Kofi James chipping in with 29.
Dominic Drakes picked up five for 45 while fellow seamer Shamar Springer claimed two for 46.
In reply, Barbados were dismissed for 204 in the 49th over, with Lenico Boucher hitting a top score of 36, Shamar Springer scoring 30 and captain Akil Greenidge getting 28.
Pacer Alzarri Joseph was the best bowler with three for 51 while Colin Archibald Jr (2-21) and Mrinal Wadhwa (2-31) supported with two wickets apiece.
Batting first, Leewards lost Ross Powell early for five with 32 on the board but Carty stepped up to anchor two successive, productive partnerships to lift the innings.
He put on 91 for the second wicket with opener Williams who hit four fours in his 83-ball stay at the crease, and then added a further 53 for the third wicket with James who slammed two fours and two sixes, in an 18-ball cameo.
Carty faced 122 deliveries and counted two fours and five sixes.
In reply, Barbados lost the early wicket of opener Lee-Germon Gaskin for ten with the score on 33 but Boucher and Kyle Hinckson (26) put on 54 for the second wicket, to stabilize the innings.
Boucher hit 72 balls and struck three fours and a six but was one of two wickets – Hinckson was the other – to fall with the score on 87.
Barbados stumbled to 90 for four before Springer and Greenidge combined in a 56-run, fifth wicket partnership, putting them back on course for victory.
Once Greenidge was lbw to Joseph, however, wickets tumbled steadily.
