The late U19 rugby player Justin Crawford though quiet, was a fun loving, person who loved to tell jokes.
So said the teen’s father, Terrence Crawford, who told this newspaper that his son was heading to the Namilco Flour Mill after they promised to sponsor the rugby team when he met his demise.
Dustin Crawford who was crushed to death on Wednesday on the Flour Mill Road.
Terrence Crawford said the police told him that they are currently investigating, but said they are yet to locate an eyewitness.
Crawford said persons in the area told him that a man on a motorcycle informed the company in question that one of their trucks had struck down his son.
“We are trying to locate this man on the motorcycle, because we have questions,” Crawford said.
Crawford noted that his son’s jersey was shredded, his hands and feet were damaged and his head was crushed. When Stabroek News arrived on the scene, there was a pool of blood.
Crawford would have celebrated his twentieth birthday on August 9.
Meanwhile the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has released a statement following the passing of under-19 player.
“The union wishes to express its shock and regret on learning of the death of Guyanese rugby player Dustin Crawford, who died in a road accident on Wednesday, July 22.
The death of Crawford happen during the union’s summer camp trip to the Guyana flour mill tour.
Dustin Crawford was an under – 19 player who, during his unfortunately short involvement with the Rugby Union, has not only made an inedible impression on his fellow colleagues but also to the sport in Guyana.
This young rugby player no doubt had great potential to one day become a leading sportsman in Guyana.
The Guyana Rugby Football Union takes this opportunity to express our condolences to the family, friends and teammates of Dustin Crawford,” the statement ended.
GRFU President Peter Green along with other members of the union were expected to visit the Crawford family yesterday to discuss funeral arrangements and to see how the union can help.
This newspaper reported Thursday that the student of the Government Technical Institute met his demise while walking along Flour Mill Road. He has a one-year-old daughter and he lived at Lot 39, Friendship.
According to reports, persons saw the truck driving away from the scene while Crawford’s lifeless body lay on the road.
The former rugby player leaves his parents and five brothers, Allain, 25, Elton, 17, Dane 14, and Elisha 11, to mourn.
