Showstoppers, Queen Street Tiger Bay, Sparta Boss and Samaroo Dam were among the winners when the inaugural Second Ground Entertainment
‘Ballers in the Summer’ knockout street football tourney commenced on Friday at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.
In the final matchup of the night, Showstoppers downed Raiders by a 2-0 score line. Dexroy Adams opened the scoring in the third minute with a placed shot into the net from the left side of the field after collecting a right side pass from Nathan Allicock.
The result would then be confirmed three minutes later as Adams netted his second of the night, striking his right footed attempt from the left side of the tarmac into the centre of the goal.
The fourth fixture of the night saw Queen Street Tiger Bay overcoming a One-goal deficit to defeat Patentia Street Ballers 4-1. Mark Mohan gave Patentia Street Ballers the initial lead in the ninth minute, slotting his strike into the net after collecting a right sided pass on the left of the area.
Their lead however would be brief as Solomon Austin netted in the 11th minute with a simple tap-in down the centre of the net, following a two-on-one situation. Austin then gave Queen Street the lead in the 16th minute, finishing into the left side after collecting a pass from the right side.
Darren Harris then made it 3-1 in the 17th minute with a shot down the centre of the net. Alpha Fletchman then sealed the result in the 20th minute with a right sided finish into the right hand corner.
On the other hand, Sparta Boss dismantled Den Amstel by a 7-0 score line compliments of doubles from Dennis Edwards in the first and 11th minute, Sheldon Shepherd in the 14th and 15th minute and new recruit Deon Alfred shortly after.
Sealing the score line with a solo effort in the second minute was Gregory Richardson. In the third fixture, Samaroo Dam defeated DeKenderen 3-0. Winston Johnson opened the scoring in the fifth minute through a right side strike into the lower right hand corner.
He then placed further distance between the two sides in the ninth minute, slotting his effort into the net from the left side of the area after collecting a right sided pass.
Algernon Scott then sealed the win in the 20th minute, walking the ball into the goal unchallenged after collecting a left side pass following two-on-situation In the other results, Agricola overcame tourney giants West Front Road-Gold is Money by a 2-1 score line while North Ruimveldt defeated Uitvlugt via the walkover route.
The sixth matchup saw West Side Ballers downing Parfaite Harmonie 2-1 on sudden death kicks after normal time ended 1-1 whilst Admiral United defeated Brothers United 1-0 compliments of a Quason McAuley 17th minute finish.
Up to press time, the semi-finals of the tournament was in progress while the grand finale and third place playoff is slated to commence today at the same venue. Winner of the tournament will walk away with $200,000.
The tournament will conclude at the same venue today with the respective semi-final, third place and championship fixtures respectively. Sponsors of the event include Golf Motor Oil and A. Forrester Lumberyard among others.
