KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC-Two unbeaten centuries were recorded in the third round of matches in the WICB Regional Under-19 Tournament here on Saturday.
West Indies youth player Shimron Hetmyer scored 135 runs, propelling Guyana to a six wicket victory over Leeward Islands while Jevoy Spence hit 107 as Jamaica demolished Canada by 167 runs.
In the other third round fixture, a half century from Keagan Simmons denied Windward islands of a win over Trinidad and Tobago who prevailed by two wickets.
At Mandeville, Balchan Baldeo, Akshaya Persaud and Kassem Khan picked up three wickets each to bowl out Leewards for 217 in 45.2 overs despite attractive knocks of 60 and 48 from Vice-captain Jaeel Clarke and Captain Kacey Carty respectively.
Opener Hetmyer then batted throughout the innings to steer his side to victory, facing 114 balls while hitting 18 fours and four sixes.
Spence’s undefeated 107 highlighted Jamaica’s solid 280 for two in a lopsided encounter against Canada at St.Elizabeth.
The young opener struck six boundaries and two sixes in his 150 ball occupation of the crease and received support in building the innings from Odean Smith who was not out on 68 and Michael Frew who scored 53.
The target proved too much for Canada who collapsed for 113 all out in 37.2 overs with Jamaican bowlers Smith and Oshane Thomas leading the destruction by picking up three wickets each.
At Louis Jamalco Sports Club, Simmons the number three batsman, stayed around for most of the innings to deny Windwards of a victory.
Ryan John smashed 66 and Gidron Pope 65 as the Windwards piled on 209 for eight from 50 overs before a five wicket haul from Othneil Lewis under mined the Trinidad innings.
Lewis bagged five for 29 and Ryan John two for 44 to severely disrupt the Trinidad run chase as the Windwards pressed for victory.
But Simmons stubborn 60 from 103 balls kept T&T in the game as they successfully chased the target with four balls to spare.
