A man who admitted to breaking into a store and stealing a quantity of clothing was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail.
Hugh Cort, 47, a porter, of Lot 1647 South Ruimveldt Park, entered a guilty plea to the charge of break and enter and larceny when Magistrate Ann McLennan read it to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 2.
The charge stated that between July 15 and July 16, at Georgetown, he broke and entered the store of Gordon Sawh and stole a quantity of clothing, valued $585,000. However, Cort stated, “My Worship is not so much clothes I tek, they lie.”
Prosecutor Deniro Jones refuted Cort’s story. He informed the court that the victim’s boutique is monitored by surveillance cameras. He said Cort was arrested and taken to the Alberttown Police Station in relation to another matter but while there he was positively identified by Sawh as the person who broke into his premises. Jones added that Cort was cautioned and he admitted to the offence and was later charged.
The court also heard that Cort was previously sentenced to a year in jail for an offence of similar nature.
After being sentenced, a visibly distressed Cort was escorted out of the courtroom.
