A former Prime Minister has given some good advice to the newly elected Granger-Nagamootoo administration. Hamilton Green who served as Prime Minister and Vice-President for several years in the Forbes Burnham administration said that the new government should stay on track in terms of their campaign promises. He stressed that the educational system needs to be retuned in order to lay the foundation for a new society which he said is extremely important at this stage of the country’s development.
He observed that “our standard is way below that what is expected of Guyanese” and called for the removal of square pegs in round holes and some who are bent on sabotaging the system.
Speaking to me from his daughter’s home in Conroe Texas, the former PNC strongman emphasized that the corrupt police officers in the force must be removed as quickly as possible, because they are bad influences on the credible ones and in order to stamp out the waves of crime now hitting the country. He pointed out there are several experienced and honest former police officers who could be re-recruited, and if necessary, external help could be sought. “People must live free of fear,” the Mayor of Georgetown emphasized.
It is important for the government to look into the country’s infrastructure, especially in the capital city and the Mayor said that it was unfortunate that it was neglected for such a long time and that it should be remedied as expeditiously as possible.
The 80-year-old politician said that he was pleased that the government had embarked on an exercise to carve out the massive corruption which has been a cancer in our society.
In conclusion he said a lot of work needs to be done to bring the country back on track and called for co-operation from all, regardless of race, colour, creed or political affiliation.
