She has had a history of performing big time wherever she competed locally or internationally. Sprint Queen, Alisha Fortune relishes the success and the opportunity to represent her country on the big stage.
At 40, most track and field athletes are no longer relevant. Not Fortune. The mother of three is eagerly anticipating to occupy the podium when she competes at the World Masters Athletic Outdoor Championship next month in France.
“I definitely want to medal and to achieve my personal best” the sprint ace told this publication yesterday.
Fortune, who wings out on Sunday for the meet which will be staged in the city of Lyon from August 4-16, compares herself to fine wine. As she ages, she gets even better.
“My training has been good, I’m doing my final preparation and the fine tuning for the week and I’m looking to record my best times ever and I am confident of doing that.”
Fortune will compete in the 100, 200 and 400m events, the same races she won gold in at the North, Central and Caribbean World Masters Athletics (NCCWMA) in Costa Rica last year.
In her career which has spawned decades, she has recorded a personal best of 11.60s in the 100m, 23.51s in the half lap event and 54.0s in the 400m. She is gearing up to raise the bar as high as the Eiffel Tower when she competes in France.
On Sunday, Fortune will depart Guyana, in transit in NewYork then proceed to Lyon.
Bon Voyage Mademoiselle Fortune.
