Minister of State Joseph Harmon last night rubbished a claim by the opposition People’s Progres-sive Party that the APNU+AFC Government is “investing some $1B to purchase 52 new Luxury Land Cruisers to be used by their ministers and advisers.”
Harmon told Stabroek News that the accusation was “absurd and ridiculous.”
The opposition party in a press statement yesterday said it was appalled by what it said was the intention which it deemed “most inexcusable, since the APNU+AFC Government has abandoned its election promises of a reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) and a 20% pay increase for Public Servants, claiming there is no money in the treasury.” The statement said that “these vehicles are custom designed with leather seats, high-end entertainment centres, inclusive of High Definition TVs, among other luxurious fittings.” Speaking with Stabroek News last evening Harmon noted that Minister of Governance Raphael Trotman will further address the PPP’s claim at the government’s post-cabinet press briefing today.
“I can however say now without fear of contradiction that there has been no such purchase”, Harmon assured, adding that he believes the PPP general secretary Clement Rohee must be “on the fringe of lunacy” to make such a claim.
