Dominic Morris, 18, will be spending the next two years in jail after being found guilty of robbing a woman of her smartphone. Morris had pleaded not guilty to a charge of larceny from the person, which alleged that he stole a Samsung Galaxy cellular phone, valued at $100,000, property of Melanie Deen.
According to police, Morris, a mason, approached Deen from behind and snatched her phone as she exited a University of Guyana bus on April 16th at Regent Street. He was, however, apprehended by public-spirited persons and turned over to the police.
Following a trial, Morris was found guilty yesterday and sentenced to two years in jail by city magistrate Faith McGusty. The case was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman.
After Morris’ sentence was handed down, the silence in the court was broken by loud wails from a female relative of the man who broke down in tears. Struggling to contain herself, the woman stormed out of the courtroom, while voicing her dissatisfaction with the actions of the prosecutor in the case.
