In what could be described as one of the worst performances in Regional youth cricket history, Jamaica were shot down for an embarrassing 27 courtesy of the defending WICB U15 champs Guyana, who strolled to their second win in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional limited overs tourney played at the Albion Sports Complex Ground yesterday.
Led by skipper and match MVP off-spinner Ashmead Nedd, who grabbed 3-3 from three overs and the faster men in Qumar Torrington (2-7), Haifa Walters (2-14) and Alphius Bookie (2-2), Guyana chased their mediocre target in 7.5 overs, losing just one wicket for 28 runs in the process with opener Junior Sinclair unbeaten on 13 after the Jamaica bowlers conceded 11 extras.
The encounter was relatively one-sided after the Jamaicans who lost to Trinidad on Monday continued their extremely poor exhibition of limited overs youth cricket in this year’s tournament. Even a slight weather break which lasted a few minutes could not help the Jamaicans regroup.
After opting to bat, visiting skipper Kirk McKenzie top-scored with 13 at the top of the order and hit the only boundary of the entire match, while eight of his other his teammates chipped in with ducks.
Apart from the opener, Chris Green (03) and George Seymour (02) were the other players to scrape a few runs.
The Guyanese bowlers were rampant, relentless and on-point as the young Nedd used his bowlers brilliantly during the carnage which lasted some 17.2 overs. Jamaica lost their first two wickets for 10 runs, and their next eight wickets for 17 runs.
They seemed unable to cope with Nedd and his boys who used the conditions and the relatively seaming but most times turning pitch to their advantage.
When the chase began, Sinclair and Robin Williams (02) were surprisingly docile and after Williams was caught by Seymour off the bowling of Andre Blake (1-12), Sinclair and Orlando Jaillall (02*) saw the team home as the players celebrated with elation.
Guyana, who earned 6.6 points following their win against Leewards, gained another 6.6 points, taking their total to 13.2. Guyana will now look to retain their title in commanding fashion when they face Windwards at the Guyana National Stadium in the last round set for tomorrow.
