CGX Energy Inc. yesterday donated $1M to the African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) to help fund the organisation’s annual Emancipation celebrations.
The cheque was presented by CGX Chairman Professor Suresh Narine at the ACDA Headquarters at Thomas Lands.
Narine told Stabroek News that ACDA is one of the cornerstone organisations in the cultural landscape of Guyana. He said that ACDA not only focuses on African history but focuses on developing the future of people of African descent.
“Emancipation is something that has had a huge impact on Guyana’s history. It continues to form dialogue about the impact of slavery and the fact that it happened and how that has affected our cultural, economic and historical landscape.” Narine noted.
Narine referred to ACDA as an “important facet in Guyana’s developmental trajectory” and indicated that CGX is always happy to be involved in these events.
ACDA’s Emancipation Day Coordinator Aisha Haynes told Stabroek News that the organisation works with children and women in depressed communities where they offer a number of developmental programmes. She noted that this donation will mainly go towards funding ACDA’s Emancipation Celebration.
Haynes stated, “With donations like these, we put on a lot of programmes but our main festivity is the Emancipation Day celebration. This year we have free admission for children, so these contributions definitely make it possible for us as we aim to make the Emancipation Festival free for everyone in Guyana.”
ACDA’s Emancipation Day Celebra-tion will be held on August 1st at the National Park.
