Drainage pipes have been cemented over in the city

Dear Editor,

The boundaries of the City of Georgetown have not changed over the years and yet after a little rainfall the main section of the city is inundated.

On a visit last year during the Xmas season there was a little rainfall and I noticed the water around the pavement next to the insurance company by Robb and High Streets did not drain. It took some time for the water to drain off. I checked and I could not see any underground pipes in the gutters to drain the water to the other side of the street. I recall in my younger days before I became an engineer, iron pipes under the roadway by the old Fogartys and elsewhere drained the water towards Muneshwer Ltd’s koker. The city workers normally flushed out these pipes annually.

Today, these pipes appear to be cemented over and the accumulation of water remains, causing flooding. Also the large drains along High Street as well as between Fogarty’s and Bookers need to be cleaned out and underground pipes to the sluice need to flushed out. The two main kokers that drain the city area mentioned above are Muneshwers and John Fernandes.

The team charged with the responsibility of looking into the flooding situation should walk around and look at the area and elsewhere where there is an accumulation of water after a period of heavy downpours.

Yours faithfully,
Malcolm Alli
