Sprint ace Alisha Fortune winged out to France last night to compete at the World Masters Athletic Outdoor Championship.
The mission: To finish among the medals, preferably gold in the 100, 200 and 400m events. The same races she won gold in at the North, Central and Caribbean World Masters Athletics (NCCWMA) in Costa Rica last year.
The confident Fortune believes the mission is possible.
I definitely want to medal and to achieve my personal best, the standout athlete told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
My training was good, the work has been done and I’m looking to record my best times ever and I am confident of doing that, the 40-year-old declared.
Fortune has had a history of performing big time wherever she competed locally or internationally. She relishes the success and the opportunity to represent the Golden Arrowhead on the big stage.
The mother of three is ready to seize the moment which could be career defining.
I had some ups and downs but I threw that behind me and I am going out there to make Guyana proud, she said.
In her career which has spawned decades, she has recorded a personal best of 11.60s in the 100m, 23.51s in the half lap event and 54.0s in the 400m. She is gearing up to raise the bar as high as the Eiffel Tower when she competes in Lyon, France
Fortune departed Guyana, proceeded to New York then boarded a flight to Lyon.
The National Sports Commission, Fly Jamaica, Payless Variety Store, K.P Thomas, Dr. Amsterdam and DDL were some of the benefactors of Guyana’s lone representative at the championships.
