A pedestrian died on Saturday evening after he was hit down by a motor vehicle on the Montrose, East Coast Demerara (ECD) public road.
Dead is Byron Persaud called ‘Baba’, 46, of Vryheid’s Lust, ECD.
The police in a press release said that at about 20:25 hours on Saturday, Persaud attempted to cross the roadway at Montrose, ECD when he was struck down by a motor vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
This newspaper understands that Persaud lived alone. He tended to a number of cows.
One of his nieces, Melissa, said that she was only informed of the accident hours after it took place and the family is still unaware of the circumstances. She added that based on the information she received, her uncle was about to deliver milk to some customers when he was hit.
A Toyota Tundra heading west along the ECD road at a fast rate was said to have hit him. He was picked up by the driver of the said vehicle and taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.
The driver is in police custody assisting with investigations. A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed today.
