The University of Guyana (UG) has appointed three members of its academic staff to the status of full professors. Earning the accolades for the first time in more than a decade are Dr Abdullah Adil Ansari, Dr Raymond Jagessar and Dr Gomathinayagam Subramanian.
According to a UG press release, all three of the promotions became effective from June 19, 2015. Two will benefit the Turkeyen campus and the other, the Tain Campus, Berbice.
All three professors have pursued studies in the Natural Sciences. Dr Ansari earned his doctorate (PhD) in Life Science-Zoology from Madras University. In addition to being published, Ansari was a research associate with the World Bank Project – Uttar Pradesh Land Development Cor-poration. During his stint at UG, which commenced in 2005, Ansari has served as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Head of Department and Dean in the Depart-ment of Biology.
Jagessar began his educational pursuit at the tertiary level in Guyana at UG where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry/Biology. He gained his PhD in the United Kingdom. Jagessar has published more than 65 articles and received international awards inclusive of the Chartered Chemist, CChem and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, FRSC, UK. The spectrum of Jagessar’s research covers Pure and Applied Chemistry, Che-mical Biology, Pharmaceu-tical and Medicinal Chemistry. He joined UG in 2005 and prior to his promotion, he served as a Reader in Chemistry.
The current Director of the Berbice Campus, Dr Subramanian also joined the university in 2005. His research interests are in the development and molecular characterisation of fungicide resistance in plant pathogens and isolation; the diagnosis and control of black sigotoka and moko disease in banana and plantain; and purification and characterisation of protein. In addition to being the author of two books and 41 research publications, Subramanian had been the recipient of several awards inclusive of the Research Associate of Life Science Award in Central Leather Institute Research Institute, Adyar, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
All three professors have made significant contributions to academia, the release said, in addition to which, “They have built strong research profiles in their respective fields, each having more than twenty-five research publications, evident by outstanding quality, productivity and scholarly impact.”
Additionally, the Uni-versity Council has also promoted one Reader, nine Senior Lecturers, 16 Lecturer II and nine indefinite tenures across the various faculties.
