Dear Editor,
I have been patient for a long time in relation to the minibuses in Georgetown. As we know minibuses are very useful and affordable for most people in Guyana. They are very handy for travelling to the town from different localities. Generally they are kind to passengers; they make sure they stop at the right place and even go out of their way to help passengers cross a busy street. Sometimes I used to wonder why all these minibuses were all over the place, but then I realized that it’s the poor man’s means of transportation.
I think minibuses should take priority over every other form of transportation, because they carry many passengers whereas I drive all alone. The minibuses contribute to the welfare of the economy both in terms of the poor and the nation. That is why sometimes I give way to them.
Having said this, I would request that all minibus drivers take other vehicles on the road into consideration. Sometimes the minibus drivers drive as if they alone are driving and all others must look out for them. I nearly hit into someone trying to manoeuvre his minibus which pulled onto the road without proper indication. Bus drivers should use their mirrors and try to do three checks before they hit the main road after they have picked up passengers. This would help the safety of all the drivers on the road, for everyone needs to use the same road and everyone pays the road tax as they do.
Yours faithfully,
Jerry Dias
