The two men who police say stole a boat and an engine during an early morning attack at Mabaruma, North West District, were yesterday charged with robbery and remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on Friday, July 31st, 2015, brothers Levi and Aidan Boyer robbed Jonathan Hutson of a wooden boat and a 200 horse-power Yamaha engine, worth $4.2 million in total. It was also alleged that they used personal violence against the on-duty security guard during the attack.
The Boyers, who reside at Two Brothers Village, both pleaded not guilty to the charge when they appeared before city magistrate Ann McLennan.
The two were represented by attorney Peter Hugh, who informed the court that they had no previous convictions.
Hugh requested that bail for his clients be granted in a reasonable sum on the basis that they posed no flight risk. In addition to this, he stated that though the boat and engine were recovered, they were not found in the possession of his clients.
Hugh further requested that the matter not be moved to Mabaruma as he noted that proceedings were only conducted there once every three months and, as a result, it would cause the case to be prolonged.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail, while citing the serious nature of the charge, and the fact that the men had initially provided the police with one address, while yesterday they claimed to reside elsewhere, bringing into question their integrity.
The magistrate upheld the prosecutor’s objections and the men were remanded to prison until August 17th, when the matter is to be heard at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
Last Friday, police stated that the attack occurred around 1AM when two men confronted the security guard, and escaped with the boat and engine. They were later apprehended in the Waini River by the police and members of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard.
