Cabinet has approved the formation of a National Commemoration Commission.
GINA said that the Commission comes out of a directive given by President David Granger for the establishment of a national commission under the aegis of the Ministry of Education.
The National Commemoration Commission was formally approved by Cabinet on July 22nd 2015. GINA said that the Commission will be co-chaired by the Ministers of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and Nicolette Henry. It will also comprise representatives of several Government Agencies, Ministries, civil society organisations and the diaspora.
The Ministry of Education is in the process of convening the Commission and establishing a formal Secretariat and dedicated working Committees. A full launch is scheduled for the third week of August, during which the public will be informed of the composition of the commission and the activities planned for Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
Preparatory work on the Commission shall be triggered by a Parliamentary motion before the scheduled Parliamentary recess for 2015, with a fully functional Commission prepared to present an Action Plan for activities by October, 2015.
Preliminary activities should begin in January of 2016, leading up to May 26th, 2015. The release said that a full report, audit, and publications/productions coming out of the Commission’s activities shall be prepared before Budget 2017.
