Police have gotten a confession in the Davonan Sookram murder case from a suspect in custody and the hunt is on for a second person, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said yesterday.
Giving an update on the case, Blanhum told Stabroek News that “we have a suspect in custody who has since confessed to his involvement in the crime”.
He added that detectives are at the moment searching for another suspect. An ex-policeman was arrested soon after Sookram’s decomposing body was found along the access road at Ruby, East Bank Essequibo by a group of fishermen passing the area. The gruesome discovery was made around 12 noon last Friday.
Police on Monday were granted an additional 72 hours to keep the man in detention so as to continue with their investigations. It is unclear if he is the person who has given the confession. Sookram was shot once to his head.
According to a police press release, the 37-year-old man was reported missing from his home since July 27 and was said to be in the company of the ex-policeman.
Police sources have revealed that the detectives are currently working on a particular line of inquiry.
