Why are gas prices in Guyana so high?

Dear Editor,

In August 2014 the crude oil market price was US$105 per barrel, and the average gasoline price was between $4.00-$4.50 per gallon in the US. Now in August 2015 crude oil is currently at US$50.43 per barrel and the average gas price is US$2.69 per gallon.

While the world is benefiting from lower prices, Guyana’s gas price is exactly the same in August 2015 as it was in August 2014. In March of this year the prices were lowered by Guyoil and other companies were forced to do the same, but that only lasted briefly. Now the prices are higher than before and it’s getting worse by the day. Guyana benefits from the cheapest supplier in the world (Venezuela) and still can’t translate that to benefits for its citizens. Instead it’s a constant race between Guyoil, Shell and Rubis to raise prices. Provided is a table demonstrating the different prices on the world market and how they compare to Guyana. The new administration (APNU+AFC) needs to address this issue as soon as possible so we, the citizens of Guyana, can benefit also.

 Yours faithfully,

Vishnu Sukhandan
