A large number of youngsters yesterday kick-started the annual Cricket Summer Camp facilitated by National Coach Garvin Nedd at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Ground, Queenstown.
Roughly 60 youngsters, ages 7-17 were placed into groups under the watchful eyes of Nedd and former Guyana/West Indies batsman Travis Dowlin as they seek to learn the fundamentals of cricket over the next few weeks.
Speaking about the opening day of the camp, Nedd said “I’m elated this morning, I’m very much impressed about the turnout for the first day because this is the foundation we use to take players forward into the future. I’m targeting the younger players, the ones who are now starting their cricket careers with some batting, bowling and agility work”.
Nedd said that he expects more students to jump on board as the camp progresses and thanked Dowlin for being a part of the two week-long session while adding that his son, National U15 skipper Ashmead Nedd will play a role in helping with the upcoming spin-bowling sessions.
Meanwhile, Dowlin in an invited comment said that he was happy to be assisting Nedd and giving back to the club and the sport which has given him everything. He said that once the youths get the hang of it, they will then have the opportunity to play a few games and get a hands-on feel.
He added that the aim of the camp apart from the fundamentals of cricket is to impart a better relationship among the youngsters as it is important to understand the concept of team-work and learning from your peers.
The camp continues today at 9:00hrs and registration is $2,000 per child.
