A Kwakwani resident was on Monday fined $15,000 and ordered to do two weeks of community service after he admitted to possession of a blunt.
The charge against Jerry Garraway, of Kwakwani Park, Berbice River, stated that on August 8th he was found in possession of three grammes of cannabis in the Kwakwani Waterfront area, Berbice River.
Garraway pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan in a city court.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that during a police search, Garraway was discovered with a transparent plastic bag bearing two white papers wrapped in cigarette form. While searching the bag, police uncovered a substance they suspected to be cannabis. Following this find, Garraway was arrested and taken to the Kwakawani Police Station, where the nature of the substance was confirmed.
Garraway, in an attempt to explain, said he found the blunt.
Magistrate McLennan, after hearing the prosecutor’s report and Garraway’s testimony, fined him $15,000 and ordered that he serve two weeks of community service. If he fails to either pay the fine or perform community service, Garraway faces a six-month-long jail sentence.
