Labourer gets two years for break-in at Timehri grocery

A labourer was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail after he admitted to stealing from a grocery.

Deepak Rameshwar Ramjattan, 26, of Albion, Berbice, was accused of breaking and entering the grocery of Phillip Fredrick, between August 3rd and August 4th, 2015, at Timehri, and stealing a quantity of items and cash, valued $62,000.

The man pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

According to the facts presented to the court by the prosecution, on August 3rd Frederick secured his shop by means provided and left for bed. On the following day, he discovered a southern wooden door to the shop open. Upon entering, he observed some items missing.

A report was made to the police, who, acting on information received, arrested Ramjattan. Ramjattan admitted to the offence and also assisted the police in recovering some of the items, the court was told.

The unrepresented man was subsequently sentenced to two years in jail.
