Hospitals were on alert last evening for patients seeking treatment for gunshot wounds after two bandits came under fire as they rode off after robbing a woman of a bag of money on Main Street.
The robbery occurred around midday, next to the Guyana and Power and Light Inc (GPL) building on Main Street.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told Stabroek News that the woman went into the GPL office to transact business. After she exited the building, one of the men confronted her. The man, who whipped out a gun, subsequently relieved her of her handbag containing cash.
But the woman’s husband, who is a licensed firearm holder, witnessed the robbery and fired two shots at the man, who quickly joined his accomplice on a waiting motorcycle cycle which sped away.
Blanhum said the police believed that one of the bandits was wounded and they have since contacted the hospitals around the city and informed them to be on the lookout for a patient who may attempt to seek medical attention.
An eyewitness said that he was nearby when the attack occurred and he recalled hearing at least four gunshots.
He said that he would be surprised if none of the bandits was hit as the man seemed to be hitting his target although the bike was moving. However, the eyewitness added that after the shooting there was no evidence of blood at the scene.
