Santa Aratak has been selected to host this year’s Heritage Village Celebration.
Santa Aratak is the only titled Amerindian village in Region Three and it is the second time the village has been selected to host the celebration.
The announcement was made at the Indigenous Heritage Month media launch on Tuesday.
The Heritage Village Celebration will take place on September 12th and the organisers plan on providing traditional Amerindian foods and beverages and displaying the everyday Amerindian way of life. They also intend to demonstrate the harvesting and preparation of Amerindian delicacies, such as the Tacoma worm.
The organisers also plan to launch Guyana’s first trail marathon at Santa Aratak. The marathon will take place on November 14th and a number of local and international athletes, including from countries such as Kenya, Canada, Brazil and Suriname, are expected to participate.
Transportation to Santa Aratak will be provided from the Timehri docks and accommodation will be provided for those who wish to overnight in the village. However, prices have not been set as yet.
The ceremonial launch of Indigenous Heritage Month will take place on September 1st at the Amerindian Heritage Village, at Sophia. The event coordinator indicated that over 600 persons are expected to attend and the feature addresses will be given by President David Granger and Indigenous People’s Affairs Minister Sydney Allicock. There will be a traditional bamboo and horn blowing ceremony at the launch and cultural performances by several indigenous groups from various regions. There will also be a number of Amerindian dishes available for sampling.
