Two cousins are now dead following an accident on the Lima Public Road, Essequibo Coast at around 01:15am yesterday.
The teenagers, 12-year-old Bidesh Mohabeer, a student of Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School and his 19-year-old cousin Rupesh Jadoo called `Ryko’ who worked as a joiner were said to be heading in the direction of Anna Regina when the accident occurred. Jadoo was driving the car which belongs to his parents when he lost control and crashed into the concrete bus shed at Lima. Mohabeer who was a passenger in the front seat of the car sustained serious injuries to his head and face.
A police press release yesterday had said that the younger boy whose age they had given as 15 had been driving at the time.
Speaking with Stabroek News, Ruvina Mohabeer, the sister of the dead 12-year-old, said that her only brother left home around 5pm on Wednesday to go with his cousin Jadoo and told his mother that he would sleep at his house at Reliance.
“Rupesh come with his car and collect Bidesh from home here and they left. That was the last time I saw them.”
Edward Mohabeer, the father of Bidesh said when he heard about the accident, he rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital at around 2:00am where he saw his son lying on a sheet with blood pouring from his body.
The man said Bidesh was already dead and he had suffered serious injuries to his head and face.
“Persons at the accident scene told me that my son was breathing when he was taken out from the damaged car but probably died on the way to hospital.”
Meanwhile, at the residence of Jadoo at Reliance, family members were mourning the loss of their loved one.
Several neighbours gathered at the homes of the deceased teenagers at Sparta and Reliance and were assisting to erect tents for wake.
Naith Ram, the uncle of Jadoo told this newspaper that he was asked to identify the body of his nephew at the scene of the accident.
“When I arrived, I saw both of the boys still in the vehicle and they appeared to be dead. I was told that the boys were going home to Reliance when `Ryko’ lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the bus shed.
The vehicle belongs to his parents but his father is sick and in Georgetown while his mother is overseas so `Ryko’ used to be in Essequibo alone. Early this morning, a car driver came and told me that my nephew got in a accident and that they wanted someone to identify the body so I went.”
At the scene of the accident, villagers gathered to look at the damaged concrete bus shed and a concrete fence nearby.
Several residents said they heard the impact when the car slammed into the bus shed and rushed out from their homes to the public road for a closer view. One resident told this publication that after ploughing through the bus shed, the car rolled several times before crashing into a newly constructed concrete fence nearby.
The two boys were pulled from the twisted car and rushed to the Suddie hospital.
Police investigations are ongoing.
