With his more celebrated Team Gillette Evolution club mates Orville Hinds and Michael Anthony among others competing overseas, Raul Leal stole the show and sprinted to his first victory of the cycling season yesterday.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) and Hassan Mohamed teamed up to pedal off their inaugural 11-race youth cycling programme at the National Park and the 18-year-old Leal rode away with the trophy for the feature 35-lap event.
Leal, arguably one of Guyana’s most promising cyclists, took pole position in one hour, 21 minutes and 44 seconds. He led breakaway mates Junior Niles and Robin Persaud onto the podium with Raphael Leung, Nicholas Alphonso and Winston Primo filling out the remaining top positions.
Besides the winner’s trophy, Leal also pocketed two sprint prizes, as did Niles, Persaud and Leung.
Other winners yesterday included: Yannick John (BMX 9-12 years), Adelia Hodge (BMX 12-14), Marcus Keiler (BMX Boys and Girls), Junior Niles (Veteran U-50), Jaleel Jackson (Juveniles), Ozia Mcaulay (Mountain Bike) and Simeon Che (BMX 6-9).
